The Science Behind Eco-Friendly Cleaning Tablets

The Science Behind Eco-Friendly Cleaning Tablets

Cleaning tablets offer a simple alternative to buying another ready-mixed bottle: add water at home and reuse a suitable bottle. But how does a small tablet become a cleaning solution? Here is the science behind the format, what it can change about your routine, and how to choose a tablet for the job.

How do cleaning tablets work?

A cleaning tablet is a concentrated solid formulation. Water dissolves the tablet and distributes its soluble ingredients through the solution. Using the amount of water specified on the packaging matters: adding extra water changes the concentration and can affect performance.

Cleaning depends on the formulation, not simply on the tablet shape. In cleaning products, surfactants help water wet surfaces and loosen oily dirt so it can be wiped away. Other ingredients can help tackle particular types of soil. Formulas vary, so check the product label rather than assuming every tablet contains the same ingredients or works on every surface.

Different surfaces need different cleaners

Greasy kitchen marks, bathroom deposits and fingerprints on glass are different cleaning challenges. Choose a product intended for the surface and follow its instructions.

Cleaning and disinfecting are not the same thing. Do not assume a cleaning tablet disinfects unless its label explicitly says so and gives directions for that use.

Why choose a refill format?

Reusing a bottle can reduce the need to buy a new bottle with each refill. A concentrated tablet also means you add the dilution water at home instead of buying it as part of a ready-mixed cleaner.

The overall environmental impact still depends on factors such as ingredients, packaging, transport and how often you reuse the bottle. The tablet format alone does not establish that a product is harmless or that its packaging is recyclable. Check the packaging and your local recycling guidance.

How to use cleaning tablets

  1. Choose the correct tablet for the surface and read the product label, including warnings and any surface exclusions.
  2. Use a clean, suitable reusable bottle or container. Add water and the tablet in the quantity, temperature and order directed on the packaging.
  3. Allow the tablet to dissolve fully, following the instructions before fitting or closing the spray head.
  4. Label the bottle and apply the solution as directed. Test on an inconspicuous area first and wipe with a suitable cloth.

Never mix cleaning products. Keep tablets and prepared solutions out of reach of children and pets, and follow the label for storage and safe handling.

Make refilling part of your routine

The most useful change is a repeatable one: keep using your suitable bottle, choose a cleaner for the task, and follow the dilution instructions each time. Explore our Refill Packs collection to find refills for your next clean.
